Siguiendo a Martha Nussbaum, Graciela Vidiella argumenta que las humanidades están llamadas a cumplir un rol importante en la promoción de la ciudadanía virtuosa que es tan crucial para la salud de nuestras democracias. Este trabajo pretende aportar al proyecto de promover una ciudadanía virtuosa reuniendo tres reflexiones sobre el tipo de educación humanística del que cabe (y el tipo del que no cabe) esperar un aporte significativo en ese sentido. Argumentaré, en primer lugar, que una educación humanística que esté (...) a la altura de tal propósito, no puede ser concebida ni practicada como un bien Veblen. Sostendré, en segundo lugar, que una formación humanística que busque promover las virtudes cívicas necesita apoyarse en una concepción integrada del conocimiento que lo entienda como parte de la sabiduría y reconozca la centralidad del conocimiento vivo frente al conocimiento inerte. Por último, señalaré la importancia de diseñar las tareas formativas y los instrumentos de evaluación con vistas a entrenar a los estudiantes en las habilidades requeridas para el pensamiento crítico y propondré una herramienta idónea a tal efecto. De estas tres maneras, intento aportar algunas precisiones sobre el tipo de educación humanística del que cabe (y el tipo del que no cabe) esperar contribuciones significativas de cara a fomentar el desarrollo de una ciudadanía virtuosa. Cuando en el año 2000 el fondo documental de la Dirección de Inteligencia de la Policía de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (DIPPBA) es cedido a la Comisión por la Memoria se generó una enorme expectativa en relación con la posibilidad de encontrar allí evidencias del accionar clandestino ejercido por el Estado durante el período 1976-1983. Dichas expectativas se enmarcaron en un contexto de ausencia de políticas transparentes en materia de archivos, en las leyes de impunidad vigentes y en el (...) proceso inédito que implicó la desclasificación de un fondo de origen reservado. Hace 17 años que el archivo de la DIPPBA está abierto a la consulta pública. El abordaje desde la disciplina archivística permitió un conocimiento integral del fondo y de la entidad productora y el reconocimiento de la inteligencia como un importante dispositivo del terrorismo de Estado. Este trabajo presentará algunas afirmaciones e interrogantes que pretenden avanzar en el conocimiento de los contextos de producción de los documentos, tensionando representaciones en torno a lo que se entiende por archivo de inteligencia. Los asesinatos de los estudiantes universitarios Cabral y Bello durante las protestas ocurridas a mediados de mayo de 1969 fueron un punto de inflexión en las crecientes manifestaciones estudiantiles que, unidas a las de otros sectores, desembocarían el 29 de mayo en el Cordobazo.

This paper proposes a view, called limitarianism, which suggests that there should be upper limits to the amount of income and wealth a person can hold. One argument for limitarianism is that superriches can undermine political equality. The other reason is that it would be better if the surplus money that superrich households have were to be used to meet unmet urgent needs and local and global collective action problems. A particular urgent case of the latter is climate change. Sustainability reporting has become a well-entrenched practice in the mining sector. Failure to adequately live up to societal expectations is now considered a significant threat to the viability of the industry. There is general agreement that broad endorsement of standards for nonfinancial disclosure supports mining companies to improve their image, while conflicts persist. Because sustainability reports “speak” on behalf of sustainably operating organizations and may create socio-political effects, we explore the symbolic nature of SR. We conceive of SR as a (...) performative practice to research how it interferes with the world that it seeks to represent. Our case study research suggests that conformity with global templates is not an end in itself but might create below-compliance effects if a common interest in mining is developed in local arenas that avoids clarification of impacts and maintains ambiguity over responsibility. It is becoming increasingly clear that most, if not all, animals and plants are associated with a diverse array of resident gut microbiota. This symbiosis is regulated by host-microbiome interactions which influence the development, homeostasis, adaptation and evolution of the host. Recent evidence indicated that these interactions can also affect the host germline and have a potential of supporting transgenerational effects, including inheritance of acquired characteristics. Taken together, the influence of gut bacteria on the host soma and germline could potentially (...) give rise to emergent phenotypes, which may be partially inherited by three distinguishable modes of transgenerational influence of gut bacteria: 1) “soma-to-soma” 2) “soma-to-germline” and 3) “soma-germline-soma”. Here, we discuss these possibilities in light of evidence supporting bacterial-mediated modes of transgenerational inheritance. All animals are consortiums of hosts and microbiota. Their interactions influence many aspects of the adaptation and evolution of the Holobiont. The host germline can also be affected which can give rise to new modes of transgenerational influence of gut bacteria: 1) “soma-to-soma” 2) “soma-to-germline,” and 3) “soma-germline-soma.”. O presente número da VERITAS reúne a maioria das palestras proferidas por professores e pesquisadores da PUCRS e de outras universidades, junto aos Cursos de Extensão que foram realizados em 1994 e 1995, na PUCRS.*Um autor, uma abordagem: Pierre Bourdieu. *Um autor, uma abordagem: Jürgen Habermas. * Tempo: uma categoria, várias abordagens. Tais cursos foram organizados com o intuito de aprofundar alguns dos pressupostos epistemológicos que embasam as investigações que venho desenvolvendo, juntamente com uma equipe, as quais se articulam à (...) sublinha de pesquisa "formação, trabalho, instituição". Nessa perspectiva, o foco de interesse desses eventos centra-se no referencial teórico-metodológico de autores - Pierre Bourdieu e Jürgen Habermas - e na categoria de análise de caráter universal - o tempo – enquanto fundamentos indispensáveis ao ato de pesquisar. Essa publicação é mérito, em primeiro lugar, do diretor dessa revista que em vários momentos instigou-me a encontrar os meios para realizar esse empreendimento. Em segundo lugar, dos palestrantes que aceitaram produzir um texto sobre o assunto que haviam abordado há alguns meses atrás. Também, é mérito das pessoas que manifestaram interesse em obter o texto das palestras que integraram esses eventos, o que assegurou o ânimo para se concretizar esse trabalho. In spite of heralded progress in civil rights, this paper pessimistically maintains that blacks are systematically excluded from directorships on the boards of the major industrial companies in this country. The statistics derived from a 1980 survey, which yielded responses from 143 companies, show that blacks constituted only 1.9 percent of the entire directorate pool, with no black chairmen, no company with more than one black director, and significantly high multiple-board service on the part of a few black directors. There (...) is a strong correlation between size and importance of a company and black directorships, as well as between longer-range company commitments and white male directorships. There is discussion of answers from board members relating to constituency representation, philosophy regarding black recruitment and reasons for the paucity of black representation. After drawing a profile of typical boards, the study shows how the pool of individuals traditionally eligible to serve as directors virtually excludes blacks, confining them to rigid and narrow categories, and concludes that the "white club" remains white because it is insulated by an inflexible system whose inequity has been internalized and whose existence current directors would rather not acknowledge. While admitting the difficulty of discussing and even defining the existence of tokenism, the paper looks at the phenomenon of single-black-member boards, questioning the status, use and professions of some black directors. In the context of a climate that encourages governmental mandating of corporate responsibility, the authors suggest that corporate initiative wisely be generated toward achieving more equitable balances in the highest economic echelons where black impotence, given the present system, can neither be remedied nor tolerated much longer. ABSTRACT We have several objectives in this article. Firstly, we return to the category of semiosphere due to its dialectical and polysemic character, but we also introduce some reflections in order to analyze more complex cultural productions. In this same sense, the category of internal and external semiotic border allows us to present the cultural, intercultural, and transcultural translation problems that are articulated with the dynamic changes of every culture. Secondly, we examine the category of culture and articulate it with (...) the no-culture, with the anti-culture, which would lead to propose three types of semiosphere: cultural semiosphere, noncultural semiosphere, and anti-cultural semiosphere, which introduce controversial aspects that must be considered. Thirdly, we study Iuri Lotman’s latest approaches on the unpredictable in cultural processes, assuming assumptions of complexity and transdisciplinarity that are present in all his work. (shrink)

Partiendo del supuesto de que lo acontecido al interior de los Centros Clandestinos de Detención (CCD) configuró una experiencia límite cuyos efectos se sostienen aún en el presente, el objetivo de este artículo consiste en aproximarnos a los modos de emergencia y/o persistencia de la violencia vivida en el espacio subjetivo. A partir del análisis de entrevistas en profundidad a sobrevivientes de los CCD en la Argentina, abordaré las formas de irrupción/disrupción narrativas que se producen en la evocación presente de (...) la experiencia de la (propia) desaparición. Si estas formas de persistencia remiten, por un lado, a temporalidades propias del acecho y la ruptura, se solapan también en y con nuevas temporalidades que lejos de subsumir al sujeto en el presente continuo, acuciante y paralizante de la violencia vivida, tornan posible la vida en términos de la proyección a futuro y la afirmación del sujeto en el presente. Este artigo apresenta uma abordagem da cidade contemporânea do ponto de vista da contribuição das novas tecnologias digitais na constituição de laços sociais e na caracterização dos espaços urbanos. A análise de exemplos de interações cotidianas entre o meio digital e a cidade ilustra as considerações teóricas sobre novas formas de experiências do espaço social, mais precisamente a da ubiqüidade, na construção de novas experiências espaciais coletivas.

This paper reports on the results of a survey of faculty members at California State University, Northridge in Los Angeles, California regarding their understanding of and familiarity with the concept of fake news. With very few studies published on the attitudes of teaching faculty at universities, this study is a unique approach to the issues facing educators, knowledge creators, and information specialists. The paper examines the origins of the term “fake news”, the factors contributing to its current prevalence, and proposes (...) a new definition. It also reports upon the attitudes that teaching faculty hold, and how they define fake news within their specific disciplines. Though nearly all surveyed faculty felt fake news was an important topic that impacted them professionally, the researchers also find that faculty across all disciplines and ranks, ages, and gender, hold widely differing conceptions of fake news. This lack of consensus may have future implications for students in particular and higher education in general and are worth exploring further. (shrink)
